WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- Facing stiff international opposition, China on Tuesday postponed a plan to force computer makers to install controversial Web-filtering software on new PCs.

The so-called Green Dam proposal, slated to go into effect Wednesday, has drawn sharp criticism from high-tech companies and human-rights groups. It also raised the specter of a trade conflict with the Obama administration, whose top trade officials asked China last week to scuttle the rule.

Xinhua, China's official news agency, reported Tuesday that the government's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology decided to delay the plan. No reason was given.

China announced the Green Dam rule on May 19 with no warning to foreign computer makers. The government said the Web-filtering software was needed to allow Chinese officials to block pornography.

Yet critics say the software could also be used to suppress access to any Web sites or information that the government considers a threat to its political power.

Computer makers also contend the filtering software has major security flaws that could make PCs more susceptible to hacking or other damage. They worry the rule could hurt sales in China, the world's second largest PC market.

Dictators have learned that. Hitler was very frank about this in his book when he said that if a big lie is told again and again and again, finally the people will believe it. P.S. Congratulations to the supreme court on the fire fighter's decision yesterday. You finally got one right. The only problem was that one of the firefighters were Hispanic. What would happen if all the Hispanics in the U.S. legally, really, find out that they are are not minorities but really just plain old Americans. Or what would happen if women woke in the morning and realize they are not minorities anymore, but just Americans. Better yet what happens if African Americans realize they don't have to be slaves any more to the liberal left. Equality is a wonderful thing, but guys, you just have to work for it.........Amen, yes, Amen!
